A, An, Some, Any (Articles)

การใช้ a และ an
1. ใช้ a นำหน้าคำนามนับได้ เอกพจน์ ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะและมีความหมายทั่วไปในความหมาย หนึ่ง โดยไม่ต้องการเน้นจำนวน เช่น   a woman, a dog, a dentist, a newspaper, a city , a book , a shop  เช่น

He is reading a newspaper.  เขากำลังอ่านหนังสือพิมพ์

2. ใช้ an นำหน้าคำนามนับได้ เอกพจน์ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ และมีความหมายทั่วไป เช่น an orange, an umbrella, an hour, an article

It's raining.You will need an umbrella .ฝนกำลังตก คุณจะต้องมีร่มกันฝน.
หมายเหตุ

• ถ้าคำนามนับได้ เอกพจน์ นั้นขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ   แต่ว่าออกเสียงเป็นพยัญชนะ ให้ใช้ a   เช่น a uniform, a university, a European, a eucalyptus ( ต้นยูคาลิบตัส ), a utensil, a union, a useful, a unit
• ถ้าคำนามนับได้ เอกพจน์ นั้นมีคุณศัพท์นำหน้าขยาย   ให้ดูดังนี้
     -หากคำคุณศัพท์ นั้นขึ้นต้นด้วยเสียงพยัญชนะก็ให้ใช้ a  เช่น  a sweet orange, a big umbrella
     -หากขึ้นต้นด้วย เสียงสระให้ใช้ an เช่น   an old city, an ugly woman  เป็นต้น
• ถ้าคำนามนั้นขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ แต่ออกเสียงเป็นสระ   หรือมี adjective ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระมาขยายข้างหน้านามนั้นให้ใช้ an เช่น
     -ออกเสียงเป็นสระ เช่น an hour, an heir, an honor
     -มีคุณศัพท์ ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ เช่น an important person

การใช้ some และ any

ทั้ง some และ any มีความหมายว่า "บ้าง" แต่ใช้แตกต่างกันดังนี้
1. some ใช้กับประโยคบอกเล่า ใช้ได้ทั้งกับนามนับพหูพจน์ได้และนามนับไม่ได้ เช่น
I have some pens. (ฉันพอจะมีปากกาบ้าง)
John wants some water. (John ต้องการน้ำบ้าง)

There are some books on the table. (มีปากกาอยู่บนโต๊ะบ้าง)
There is some sugar in the bowl. (มีน้ำตาลทรายอยู่ในชามบ้าง)

2. any ใช้กับ
2.1 ประโยคปฏิเสธ ใช้ได้ทั้งกับนามนับได้พหูพจน์และนามนับไม่ได้ แต่ความหมายจะเปลี่ยนเป็น
"ไม่ ______ เลย" เช่น
I don't have any pens. (ฉันไม่มีปากกาเลยสักด้าม)
John doesn't want any water. (John ไม่ต้องการน้ำเลย)
There aren't any pencils under the table. (ไม่มีดินสออยู่ใต้โต๊ะเลยสักแท่ง)
There isn't any tea in the cup. (ไม่มีน้ำชาอยู่ในถ้วยเลย)

2.2 ประโยคคำถาม ใช้ได้ทั้งกับนามนับได้และนามนับไม่ได้ แต่ความหมายจะเปลี่ยนเป็น
"_______ บ้างไหม" เช่น
Do you have any pens? (คุณมีปากกาบ้างไหม)
Does John want any water? (John ต้องการน้ำบ้างไหม)
Are there any books in the schoolbag? (มีหนังสืออยู่ในกระเป๋าเรียนบ้างไหม)
Is there any coffee in the cup? (มีกาแฟอยู่ในถ้วยบ้างไหม)
