Subject-Verb Agreement

Singular Subject           + Singular Verb (V+s,es)

Plural Subject               + Plural Verb

1.            กรณีมีประธาน 2 ตัว เชื่อมด้วย and โดยปกติถือเป็นพหูพจน์

S1 and S2 = พหูพจน์

Jean and David are moving back to Australia.

ยกเว้น กรณีมีประธาน 2 ตัว เชื่อมด้วย and   แต่นำมาใช้โดยคิดเป็นหน่วยเดียวกัน เป็นเอกพจน์

Bread and butter has been my breakfast for years.

Honesty and truth is the best policy.

Rice and curry is what  we have  for lunch today.     (ข้าวและแกงอยู่ในจานเดียวกัน)

Rice and curry are what  we have  for lunch today. (ข้าวอยู่หนึ่งจาน และแกงอีกหนึ่งจาน)

2.            ประธานซึ่งเชื่อมด้วย or, Either…… or…… และ Neither….. nor

เช่น
Neither the Priminister nor his representatives are to attend the meeting.

Either the teachers or the principal is to blame for the accident.

ให้ใช้ประธานตัวหลังเป็นหลัก

S1 or S2

Either S1 or S2                     ใช้ S2 เป็นประธาน

Neither S1 nor S2

3.            ประธานซึ่งเชื่อมด้วย together with, as well as

เช่น
The priminister together with his representatives is to attend the meeting.

The teachers as well as the principal are to blame for the accident.

ให้ใช้ประธานตัวหน้าเป็นหลัก

S1 together with S2

S1 as well as S2                      ใช้ S1 เป็นประธาน

4.            ประธานที่มีคำนามมากกว่า 1  และเชื่อมด้วย and   

หากเป็นคนหรือสิ่งเดียวกัน จะมี article ที่ประธานตัวหน้าแห่งเดียว

หากเป็นคนละคนกันจะมี article ที่คำนามทั้งสอง เช่น

The manager and owner is my friend.

ผู้จัดการและเจ้าของร้านเป็นคนเดียวกัน
The manager and the owner are my friends.

ผู้จัดการและเจ้าของร้านเป็นคนเละคน 

The black and white cat is my cat.

แมวขาวดำใต้โต๊ะนั้นเป็นแมวของฉัน ( ตัวเดียว )
The black and the white cat are my cats. 

แมวขาวและแมวดำใต้โต๊ะนั้นเป็นแมวของฉัน ( 2 ตัว )

5.            each , every + n.เอกพจน์ = n.เอกพจน์

many, several, some + n.พหูพจน์  = n.พหูพจน์  

6.            The number of + n. พหูพจน์ = เอกพจน์

A number of + n. พหูพจน์ = พหูพจน์

7.            คำต่อไปนี้ถือเป็นเอกพจน์ เมื่อมาเป็นประธานของประโยค

8.            Only one of, one of + n. พหูพจน์ = n. เอกพจน์

Both of + n. พหูพจน์ = n. พหูพจน์

Many of + n. พหูพจน์ = n. พหูพจน์

All of + n. พหูพจน์ = n. พหูพจน์
